Hear your way through a place.
The Blind Traveler is an iPhone app for people who navigate by sound. It speaks clear, short guidance about where you are and what is around you, so you can move with confidence and without needing to look at the screen.
What it does
- Spoken guidance. Short announcements tell you what is nearby, in plain language, with no screen to read.
- Distance readings. Steady, spoken distances to nearby points of interest, so you can judge how far away something is.
- Beacon-based wayfinding. Works in venues and spaces where Bluetooth beacons are installed, including places that GPS cannot reach well indoors.
- Choice of voice. Use your phone's built-in voice, or a natural-sounding generated voice when you have a connection.
- Your languages. Choose the language the app speaks in.
- Fine tuning. Adjust how distances are smoothed and how quickly readings update, so the app suits how you walk.
How it works
- Open the app and turn on Bluetooth. Allow Location when you are asked. Location is used for indoor and venue guidance.
- Walk into a space that has beacons. The app announces what it finds and how far away it is.
- Use the menu to pick a scenario, change the voice, or adjust the settings. Everything is built for VoiceOver.
The Blind Traveler works where beacons are installed. Outside those places, it can still speak the app's menus and settings, but it cannot place you in a space it has no beacons for.
Accessibility first
The app is designed to be used by ear and by touch. Every control has a spoken label, screens are simple, and the app does not depend on reading text to work. If you find something that is hard to use with VoiceOver, please tell us. It helps us fix it.
Privacy
The app does not require an account. It sends only the information it needs to work, and it explains exactly what that is in our privacy policy.
